Hotdog Storm - Classic Arcade Shoot 'Em Up (Marble Inc. 1996)

A vertical scrolling classic arcade shoot 'em up from Japanese game developer Marble Inc., Hotdog Storm was published to arcades in South Korea by Ace International Co. in 1996. Despite the game's comical name and opening sequence that depicts a ready to eat Hot Dog in a bun, the game is actually a futuristic space shooter that has nothing at all to do with hot dogs whatsoever. Players manned a space craft, battling it out against a futuristic army of alien spaceships, giant mechs, and helicopters, among others. Besides your main gunner, there are 3 separate power-up charge shots; all of which can be obtained by picking up various icons throughout each stage. The first is a narrow, but powerful fire burst, while the 2nd is a stream of giant green orbs that act as homing missiles; and the 3rd is a multi-directional thin-beamed laser attack, that while not being particularly powerful, it does give you several seconds of shielding from enemy fire. The green orbs are by far the most powerful of all weapons in the game, they can wipeout virtually everything on the screen at times. They latch onto enemies like a magnet and unleash a sustained burst of firepower upon them, not releasing until the enemy is destroyed or your character moves within range of another enemy. There is also a bomb attack, though its honestly not that powerful. While the bomb attack has a decent blast radius, the further enemies are from the blast, the less damage it will do. Something else to note about the bombs is the fact they're often unleashed directly in front you, meaning you have to be very close to your enemies in order to get a direct hit. While many may assume the game's title and opening scene with a hot dog to be misleading, and rightfully so, its likely the opening theme was just meant to be a cheeky bit of humor from the developers. After all, what were you expecting, mutant hot dogs squirting ketchup and mustard all over the screen?
