Songwe Regional Commissioner, Jabiri Omari Makame has said that bar staff, inns and other entertainment venues have a great contribution to society and should be respected like other private and government sector employees. RC Makame has said that if all bar staff in the country were to quit their jobs at the same time, many citizens would miss out on the essential services they rely on every day, which shows the importance of the job in society. In addition, he has agreed with the complaints made by some staff about being harassed, bullied and insulted by some customers and the community. He said the government will continue to uphold their rights by encouraging the formalization of the sector through an officially recognized union so that they can access education, loans, various opportunities as well as have their challenges heard in the workplace. He has also called on bar and inn owners to adhere to the wage levels set by the government after it was discovered that some workers were paid low wages that do not meet their needs. On the other hand, some citizens have suggested that the waiters should consider modest clothing to protect their dignity and reduce temptations that could lead to conflicts with customers. RC Makame said this at the Youth and Women Opportunities Forum held at the Songwe District Council after young people working in the bar presented their concerns.
