Warli Folk art is deeply ingrained in India's rich art tradition. This art form extends from Kashmir to Kanyakumari. In this Art Gallery column, we introduce you to various forms of folk art. This issue presents a brief overview of Warli: The Thane district of Maharashtra is home to the Varli tribal community. The art of this tribal community is known as Warli folk art. This tribe stretches from the south of Maharashtra to the Gujarat border. It is difficult to determine the age of Warli folk art. The stories depicted in the art suggest that it may have originated even before the advent of reading and writing, but archaeologists believe that the art gained popularity in the tenth century. Hindu, Muslim, Portuguese, and English rulers ruled this region, and each encouraged it. A new era of popularity began in the seventeenth century when it was brought to market. Warli artworks were created specifically for weddings. They were considered auspicious, and a wedding was considered incomplete without them. This nature-loving tribe deeply depicts their love for nature in Warli art. These paintings, consisting of triangular figures, human and animal figures, lines, and geometric dots and lines, were created by women on the mud walls of their homes. A distinctive feature of this art is that there are no straight lines. Lines are drawn by connecting dots. These are the primary themes used to depict the activities of humans, animals, and plants. Marriage, men, women, children, plants, animals, birds, and fields are the primary themes of these artworks. Social activities are painted using a paste made by mixing rice flour with water on a surface coated with cow dung and mud. In addition to social occasions, squares are also painted on the outer walls of homes during Diwali and Holi. These festivals coincide with harvest time, so fresh rice flour is used in the art during this time. The coloring is still done with small plant sticks. There is a significant difference between the two paintings, each depicting a different event. A person named Mash, from the Varli community, gave practical form to this art. He dared to take Warli folk art outside Maharashtra and experimented with it extensively. He depicted folk tales as well as mythological stories in the Warli style. He also depicted the lives of Vaghdev, Mother Earth, and Panduraja in the Warli style. He incorporated modernity into Warli art. He used a mixture of clay and glue, as well as brushes and industrial glue to make his work more durable. This experimentation gave new dimensions to Warli art, and along with its growing international popularity, the economic status of the Warli community also began to improve. Nowadays, in addition to Mash, artists like Shivram Gojre and Sharat Valghani are also working in this direction, using poster colors on paper and canvas. The journey of Warli artworks has begun from the cow dung-dusted walls of homes and has reached canvas today.
