Criminal Law can feel broad at first, because there are so many offences, defences and case authorities to learn. But the key is knowing the recurring topics, understanding how actus reus and mens rea work, learning the main Irish authorities, and practising how to structure clear, issue-led answers. Criminal Law rewards students who can spot the offence, identify the mental element, deal with any defences, and apply the relevant authority in a focused way. You don’t need to know everything perfectly, but you do need a strong working knowledge of the core areas and a clear method for answering exam questions.
