And even within the medical profession, some therapists attribute an almost miraculous power to them. Rheumatism, asthma, skin diseases... the indications for thermal spa treatments are numerous, and more than 530,000 people go on a spa treatment each year to one of the 89 resorts spread across France. Where does this confidence in the power of thermal spa treatments come from? Do the waters used have curative properties? Are the treatments provided more effective than traditional medications? Thermal medicine lacks scientific evidence to demonstrate its benefits, and spa doctors are often reluctant to have their practices evaluated. Does thermalism have genuine therapeutic value? Or is it, as some claim, simply "a vacation at the expense of social security"? Patients prescribed spa stays receive treatments that are reimbursed at 65%, and supplemental health insurance can cover the remaining 35%. It's understandable that satisfied spa-goers want more. But at a time of hospital closures and reduced drug reimbursements, should social security continue to cover these thermal treatments? Because behind this public health issue, enormous economic interests are at stake. The economy of spa towns relies heavily on thermalism, and more than 100,000 jobs depend on it. The mayors of the municipalities concerned, who are also often members of parliament, exert considerable influence on political decisions to defend their interests. Is there a thermal spa lobby in France? Why does any reform of the system seem impossible? And what new markets need to be conquered to attract even more spa-goers? From Dax to Vichy, and even within the halls of the National Assembly, an investigation into the inner workings of the thermal spa industry.
