If you build and bring your own cyclekart, you get to cruise the streets of Huntsville beneath towering quaking aspens, cottonwoods, and spruce trees in one of the prettiest mountain towns in Utah. The whole atmosphere feels like a rolling vintage car show mixed with a grassroots motorsports carnival. The “vintage” part is usually handcrafted in home garages, while the “motor” part is often a stubborn little 200cc single-cylinder engine held together by equal parts ingenuity and optimism. Cyclekarters from all over North America bring their lightweight, hand-built machines inspired by 1910s, 1920s, and 1930s Grand Prix cars. For a day and a half, people drive, socialize, trade mechanical stories, admire each other’s craftsmanship, and occasionally fix something in a parking lot with borrowed tools and unsolicited advice. This event is organized by Kelly Wood along with the help of Steve Vinson, Dennis Thomas, and a ton of other great folks that contribute untold hours behind the scenes. Unlike traditional motorsports, the emphasis is less about speed and competitiveness and more about creativity, craftsmanship, and fun. Attendees include first-time builders, hobby machinists, artists, woodworkers, welders, and people who love old racing culture. For someone who has never built a cyclekart: You do not need professional fabrication skills to start. Most builders use commonly available tools and parts. The community is very open about sharing plans and advice. Many people begin with basic skills and learn as they go. The culture around cyclekarts values individuality. No two machines are exactly alike, and creativity matters more than performance. What really makes the Huntsville gathering a good time is the builders themselves. It is a collective of highly imaginative, determined, and varying ranges of mechanically skilled adults who looked at normal hobbies like golf or fishing and decided instead: “What if I spent a year or so fabricating a tiny vintage-style vehicle that can go 50 with terrible brakes, a frighteningly narrow track width, and no safety protection whatsoever for a rollover? ...that's a great idea, I'm doing it." Half the event involves parade laps or spirited driving; the other half involves diagnosing weird vibrations and loose parts.
