Dodge Maneuver The Mazda CX-3 is one of the most agile vehicles among its alternatives on the road and is notable for its precise driving feel. However, its response to a sudden double lane change maneuver is not good. On the first attempt each day, when we are not yet familiar with the vehicle's reactions in this situation, we always try to perform the maneuver at 77 km/h (48 mph). On this occasion, the CX-3 missed the cone-marked area by a wide margin. Although the driver was partially to blame because the steering inputs were late and insufficient, the suspension failed to control the body movements, and the electronic aids failed to prevent the tires from clearly sliding sideways. It was easy to guess that subsequent attempts would encounter abrupt, unpredictable, and difficult-to-control movements. The maximum entry speed at which we successfully performed the maneuver was 75 km/h (45 mph). On this occasion, the driver had already learned how the steering worked to adjust the car's line and wasn't too hard on controlling the reactions, although he did have to deal with moderate suspension rebounds. The tires provided poor grip, and the electronic aids apparently didn't intervene. On this other attempt at 75 km/h (45 mph), we also managed to pass without knocking over any cones, but the suspension rebounds were much greater, to the point that several wheels were simultaneously in the air, some quite high off the ground. As can be seen in the images, the tire sidewalls deformed under the most violent impacts, and the rims came close to touching the asphalt. On this run at 76 km/h (47 mph), the most violent reactions occurred. Due to the bouncing of the suspension, the steering didn't respond immediately to the driver's input to enter the third lane of cones. The final turn materialized too late, triggering oversteer that produced large body movements. These were perceived with some alarm from the interior. Slalom The CX-3's reactions were satisfactory in the slalom. We didn't detect any electronic aids, which led to agile and fluid shifts, but body roll movements were well controlled, and the feeling of steering the car was complete. The steering is informative and direct.
