One thing that makes Sardinia interesting is the fact that is an island, so what difference has this made to the genetics of its people? Before we get into its genetic history, let’s get a quick overview of Sardinia itself. Well it is the second largest island in the Mediterranean Sea after Sicily, and it sits just south of the French island of Corsica. Sardinia is one of twenty regions in Italy and has a population of just over 1.6 million. Even though it is part of Italy, it does have some degree of autonomy, with its official name being the Autonomous Region of Sardinia. The island is also known as one of the world’s blue zones, meaning they have a high amount of people who live to over 100. Down through history, Sardinia was settled and occupied by numerous forces, including the Phoenicians from the Levant to the Carthaginians from North Africa. In 238 BC, the island became a province of Rome, merging with Corsica to become the province of Sardinia and Corsica. After the fall of the Roman empire, Sardinia became increasingly autonomous, but it had interactions with various forces, including the Byzantine Empire, Arab rulers, the maritime republics of Genova and Pisa, the Catalan and Aragonese Kingdom, and the Duchy of Savoy.
