KC Presents - EAS Scenario #4: South Jersey Earthquake (J-Alert/NHK Style)
Hello everybody! Welcome to my long overdue fourth entry in my EAS Mock Scenarios Series. It's been many months since I have developed a new episode, however I only like to make Emergency Alert System video mocks when I get inspired, and when I have available time. (Sorry, I work in healthcare, so I didn't get to take any time off of work during the entire COVID-19 pandemic. Incidentally, I hope everyone out there is staying safe!) When you think of earthquakes, you usually think about the Pacific Ocean. Areas like California, for example, are known for having large scale earthquakes. You may also think about Japan, who has the most earthquakes than any place else that you can imagine. One thing that I always gave Japan credit for, was their methods of alerting the public of emergencies. Not only are you notified by television, radio, computer or mobile device, but you can also be alerted by a series of public speakers placed throughout the entire country. Not only that, but if you have a device that is visual, you get lots of detailed information, and in the case of an earthquake, a map showing exactly the areas that are impacted. Plus, information is updated frequently, with visuals on screen, and live presenters giving up to the second details. Here in the US, we don't have those kind of luxuries. But what if we did? What if the Emergency Alert System got an upgrade that would give us the same kind of earthquake warnings that Japan has, while still using some of the existing technology? (Gotta save a little bit of money somehow, I suppose.) That is what the point of this scenario is all about. Mixing the Japanese J-Alert Early Earthquake Warning System, with an American location. And while we are on that location, yes! South Jersey can get earthquakes! They are far from in between, and they are typically minor. The last one that the United States Geological Survey calculated for this area was about a year or so ago in 2019, and it was only a 2.0 magnitude. But it happened to be around the area used for this scenario. I plan to eventually continue such a concept that triggers a tsunami warning, but I thought to get started with making international style alerts, I would at least make an attempt to create a simple J-Alert earthquake warning on USA soil. The video contains valid EAS "end of message" tones, however as a way of deterring the playback of the tones on actual broadcasting mediums, two different alerts are played at the same time as a way of scrambling the data header bursts, making them potentially non-functional. Also, the following EAS Scenario is a work of fiction, with the exception of the test message at the beginning of the story line, which was based on an actual event. Similarities between any real life names, locations, landmarks, products and situations found within this scenario are purely coincidental. Making these homemade EAS mocks is something new to me, and I would love to hear your feedback. Please refrain from giving me requests at this time. I have a lot of great ideas in my head, some that have been done before, and others that I have not seen done previously, and I also do not have any schedule for when new scenarios will be done. I work full time, go to school, and ironically have a radio program at my college twice a week. (So I know a little bit about this EAS stuff!) Enjoy the video, and thanks for watching! Please leave me any comments that you may have, positive or negative, but in all cases, make it constructive! Have a great day!
