Muzik Sin Barera - A short documentary by Selwyn de Wind

‘Muzik Sin Barera’ is a short music documentary about two of the most outstanding artists from Curaçao: about their passion, their dedication, and their most recent collaboration. Though they have different music backgrounds, vocalist/singer-songwriter Dibo D and pianist/composer/arranger Randal Corsen share a passion for crossing music boundaries. Born in Curaçao, Randal lived in the Netherlands for 23 years, where he studied music, worked as a professional musician and music teacher, and became the first Antillean winner of the prestigious Edison (Jazz) award and the first composer of an Antillean opera. Born in Curaçao as the son of one of the most iconic local songwriters/bandleaders, Dibo quickly became one of the most successful popular music vocalists on the island himself, with several awards and hits to his name. Their collaboration started in the end of 2016, when Randal invited Dibo to be part of a concert with the Randal Corsen Big Band. Since then, they collaborated in many different music projects, performing in both Curaçao and abroad. With their new and ambitious music project ‘Muzik Sin Barera’ (Music Without Boundaries’) they aim to elevate music in Papiamentu (language spoken in Curaçao) and bring elements of popular, classical, jazz, urban and Antillean music together, resulting in something fresh and new. Dibo and Randal initially approached film director Selwyn de Wind (Atardi) to do a shorter behind the scenes film project while creating Muzik Sin Barera. Selwyn de Wind: “After hearing the first song of this project I thought ‘Why not make a short music doc? Their (Dibo & Randal) take on Curaçaoan classic & popular music is very unique, and their passion and dedication quite remarkable! I began filming right after the first lock down period (related to Covid 19) last year and the rest is history!” The short music documentary follows Dibo & Randal during the recording and production sessions in Curaçao and the Netherlands, giving a glimpse of their creative process, and shows how it all started for both of them individually, and how their remarkable collaboration came about.
