Professor Emeritus Dato’ Dr Adeeba Kamarulzaman is Malaysia’s leading expert in infectious diseases and a global advocate for HIV/AIDS prevention, policy reform, and public health equity. Born in Malaysia, Prof Adeeba graduated from Monash University in 1987, later training in internal medicine and infectious diseases at Monash Medical Centre and Fairfield Infectious Diseases Hospital in Melbourne. Her most enduring legacy is the founding of CERiA (Centre of Excellence for Research in AIDS), which conducts multidisciplinary research on HIV—from clinical studies to public health and policy. Prof Adeeba has been instrumental in shaping Malaysia’s response to HIV/AIDS, especially among key populations such as people who use drugs and incarcerated individuals. In 2020, she became the first Asian President of the International AIDS Society, amplifying Malaysia’s voice in global health forums.
