Friends, we're in Matiguás. In the previous video, we explored the municipality, and this time we headed to the Los Cuatro Hermanos and Corral de Piedra farms, located in the Sierra Quirragua Nature Reserve. Doña Alba Luz Blandón showed us what life is like in the countryside: from riding horses and milking cattle to driving on muddy terrain. Today, women not only perform domestic chores but also jobs traditionally considered masculine. While we traveled by pickup truck along unstable roads, a common occurrence due to the rainy season, others began their journeys walking long distances or riding horses to reach their homes and workplaces. In the countryside, agriculture and livestock farming are the main sources of income for these families. The trip was pleasant thanks to the breathtaking views of the natural landscapes and the harmonious sounds that only Mother Nature can provide. During our journey, we had to walk uphill, as we Nicaraguans say, meaning over very steep terrain. The houses are usually built near mountains, which are enchanting for their cool climate and welcoming shade in the morning, ideal for milking cows and selling the milk that nourishes our bodies. During this fascinating time spent in the countryside, I carefully observed how they fed the chickens in the yards. At breakfast time, we learned how to make tortillas. This food is a common staple on Nicaraguan tables, serving as a nutritional complement. It's made from corn and accompanied by cuajada (a type of fresh cheese), cooked beans, and coffee. In these rural homes, cuajada, made from cow's milk, is a widely sold product. Here I'll show you the essential steps in its preparation. After this, we said goodbye to the Corral de Piedras farm and began our journey to the Los Cuatro Hermanos farm. It was a two-hour drive along a road that allowed us to enjoy the beauty of the natural surroundings. Although the access to the second farm wasn't easy, it gave me a wonderful experience riding through mud, crossing beautiful rivers, and learning the difference between a mule and a horse. Upon arriving at the second farm, we needed to recharge our batteries, and they treated us to a delicious chicken soup, a typical Nicaraguan dish, especially popular in the villages. Its ingredients, besides chicken, include a variety of vegetables. In the countryside, raising livestock and cultivating coffee are fundamental, as these economic activities allow families to survive and provide professional education for their children. To end this video on a high note, we ventured into the Sierra Quirragua Nature Reserve. In the countryside, one has the blessing of experiencing our beautiful natural resources up close. I should mention that the inhabitants of these areas are accustomed to walking long distances. I, as we say, was "out of breath," meaning exhausted, but I thoroughly enjoyed the hike and taking a dip in the refreshing waters of this natural spring. I hope you enjoyed this fascinating adventure.
