What if a tram track could be stronger—even without steel rebar? The Korea Railroad Research Institute (KRRI), in collaboration with ERS Co., has developed a new Fiber-Reinforced Concrete (FRC) tram track slab system and verified its performance through real-world installation and testing at the Osong Tram Test Track. Instead of steel rebar, this technology uses finely distributed synthetic fibers throughout the concrete to reduce early cracking and improve resistance to impact and fatigue. This allows the slab thickness to be reduced by 10–15% while maintaining the strength and durability required for tram operations. By combining precast slab production (PRB) with smart modular slab assembly (SMS) on site, the construction process is greatly simplified. As a result, construction costs can be reduced by about 15%, and construction time by up to 50% compared to conventional methods. This technology has already been applied to the Parramatta Light Rail in Sydney, Australia, achieving a carbon reduction of approximately 4,800 tons. In Korea, it has been selected for Daejeon Metro Line 2, with further validation underway through trial operations on the Wirye Tram Line. Want to see how this technology works in the real world?
