Following the trail of her father's unfinished research, Lara arrives in a ghostly Seattle. Abseiling from her private helicopter onto the roof of a decaying hotel, she finds herself plunged into silence, broken only by the cries of the Infected—brown, still-"young" creatures—and the footsteps of the Cult's soldiers who have transformed the luxury suites into plundering outposts. Having managed to escape the city in an enemy van, Lara follows the supply trail to an old, abandoned clinic. Here, the reality becomes even grimmer: the Cult is using the facility as an experimentation laboratory, where mutated, dehumanized soldiers roam among rusted medical equipment. The air begins to thicken, and the flames around it turn an eerie purple, a sure sign of a spore saturation that is altering the very physics of the environment. Her search for the truth propels her aboard a cargo plane bound for unexplored heights. Among the Snowy Ruins, Lara must confront not only the freezing cold and the age-old traps of forgotten civilizations, but also a more resistant variant of the infected, whose flesh is beginning to pale as the fungus matures. To proceed, she is forced to recover two Cyan Ore, energy-charged cyan minerals that serve as keys to a cyclopean portal carved into the rock, the last barrier fanatically defended by the Cult. Beyond that portal, Lara slips into darkness, ending up in a submerged subway. The steel tunnels of modern civilization are now a flooded, claustrophobic labyrinth, where the reflections of the green water mix with the ghostly whiteness of the now almost completely mutated infected. Swimming between overturned train cars and ghostly stations, Lara follows the flow of spores, sliding ever deeper, until she accesses the Spore Vault. This final lair is a revelation: an immense ancient structure, a mix of hydraulic cisterns and solemn tombs, now completely overturned by a suffocating vegetal and fungal overgrowth. In this "Zero Sanctuary," the air is a purple mist and the enemies are bone-white. At the end of the path, guarded by a giant infected—a titanic mass of muscle and mycelium resembling a Bloater—rests the Silica Heart. Having defeated the behemoth, Lara extracts the artifact: a cyan crystal heart pulsating with an ancient light.
