Why Watch Prices Won’t Stop Climbing

Smartwatches did not invent the idea of wearing something useful on your wrist. But once the Apple Watch arrived, the traditional watch industry had a new problem. This was not about accuracy. Quartz had already won that fight decades earlier. This was about functionality. In this video, I look at what I’m calling the Connected Crisis: how smartwatches changed the wristwatch market, how luxury brands like TAG Heuer, Louis Vuitton, Hublot and Hermès tried to respond, why Garmin became such a serious threat, and why traditional watches may now need to justify their place on the wrist more than ever. Swiss watch export volumes have fallen dramatically over the last decade, but export values have risen. So the wristwatch is not dead. The market has just moved. The question is whether that future still leaves room for affordable, accessible, enthusiast-friendly brands like Timex, Casio and Swatch. Because if telling the time is no longer enough, every watch now needs a reason to exist.
