As usual, however, before discussing the concept of Shantungosaurus, I'll first present what the real Shantungosaurus was like. This herbivore is considered the largest non-sauropod dinosaur. Adult individuals of this species could measure up to 17 meters in length and weigh up to 16 tons. Such a massive mass meant it had no natural predators in its habitat. It existed during the middle and late Cretaceous, from 85 to 75 million years ago. Shantungosaurus, on the other hand, inhabited what is now China. Its remains were found in Shandong Province, which is also where its name comes from, which translates to "Shandong lizard." This enormous herbivore belonged to the Chadrosauridae family, so it was closely related to Parasaurolophus, Maiasaura, and Edmontosaurus, with which it shared many similarities. Among its distinctive features, Shantungosaurus had large holes next to its nostrils, which were likely covered with loose soft tissue. It is suspected that these structures may have been used for communication between individuals.
