Astor Model DL - 1940 - Troubleshooting Weak Volume

Edit: I now know the radio was from 1940 not 1947 as I thought. Sorry for the misinformation. While visiting Sydney recently, my friend rang me and said he had an old Astor radio he had worked on but couldn't get it to work properly. I picked it up and brought it back to Queensland. This has been heavily worked on by a number of people, that rings alarm bells! That alone makes it the worst kind of radio to work on. I will have a go but don't hold out much luck.
