Crinkled Crayon Drawings

Crinkled Crayon Drawings What happens when wax crayons and water colors are layered together? Find out in this mixed media experiment! Grade: k-5 Approximate Time Needed: 5-15 minutes Materials: 8 ½ x 11 inch white computer paper, scissors, assorted colors of crayons, watercolor paint, watercolor brush, clean water in a container, paper towel Waxes are lipids, an oily substance made of long-chain fatty acids. Waxes are often found on leaves to protect the plants from water loss such as evaporation. Because waxes are water insoluble, they repel liquids. Natural waxes can be produced not only by leaves, but by bees, sheep, and even whales! Synthetic waxes, which is what crayons are made of, often come from crude oils. Art Terminology: Shading – the process of altering the value (light and dark) to create the illusion of 3D shadow on a 2D surface. Contrast – A noticeable difference between hues, values, or textures that are next to each other. Gradient – a smooth transition between two or more hues, shades, or textures. Activity Steps: 1) Line up the edges of the paper and fold it in half widthwise. 2) Open up the paper, line up the edges again, and fold it in half lengthwise. 3) Open the paper once more. Use scissors to cut the paper along the creases. 4) Choose a piece of the cut paper and draw a picture with the crayons. 5) Sketch, shade, blend, and fill in the paper to create a layer of wax. 6) Once your drawing is done, crumple up the paper until it’s wrinkly! 7) Open the paper and press it flat on your work surface. 8) Brush watercolor paint all over the drawing so the cracks soak up the paint. 9) Blot the excess paint with a piece of paper towel, then set aside to dry.
