Why Does Everything in the Universe Rotate?

Everything in the universe spins — planets, stars, galaxies, black holes, and the elementary particles inside every atom of your body. But why? Where does all this rotation actually come from? The answer traces back to a single fact about space itself. From that one fact, through a mathematical theorem proved in 1915, the rotation of everything in the observable universe follows as an inevitable consequence. In this video we follow that chain from end to end — from collapsing molecular clouds to neutron stars spinning seven hundred times per second, from the flat disk of the Milky Way to the quantum spin that makes chemistry possible. Along the way we discover dark matter hidden inside galaxy rotation curves, and find out why a figure skater pulling her arms in is demonstrating the same law that shaped the solar system. One symmetry. Everything else follows.
