Schabbach ist überall: Spurenfindung Heimat. Unterwegs im Hunsrück
Back in the Hunsrück. The idea is to retrace the filming locations and plots from Edgar Reitz's film series "Heimat." #hunsrück #schabbach #soonwald I'll start in the small town of Morbach. Here, Café Heimat has transformed Reitz's parents' house into a place of remembrance and encounter. A good starting point. But the very next place, the Baldenau castle ruins, loses the trail in favor of free association (to be picked up again later). The summer heat chases me up the Erbeskopf; there's no higher elevation for miles around. But the dome of the radar station is too prosaic, too real. The next towered hill is the Idarkopf. A little lower, but with just as fresh air. The fact that the haze obscures the view is bearable. And in the middle of the forest lies an ideal, quiet spot for the night. Below the Idarkopf lies Stipshausen. A surprise: on the edge of town, a very stimulating sculpture park, next to it not only a Jewish cemetery – whose almost hidden distribution provides insight into the significance of Jewish life in this country – before the collapse of civilization – for those who do not close their eyes. And next to the cemetery, a touching memorial stone, the kind one wishes to see in many places. Passing an abandoned slate mine in the middle of the forest, the original trail returns: filming in Woppenroth, the original Schabbach from the first season of "Heimat," comes alive when a local resident offers a chat. From here, a not-so-short detour north to the Nunkirche church on another windswept Hunsrück hilltop. A tree ruin marked by lightning hints at the threat posed by the dark clouds on the horizon, against which the fictional gravestone of the film's Simon family stands like a regular gravestone in the cemetery. The modernized interior is contrasted by the bell tower with stunning frescoes from the 13th and 14th centuries. A little further south and more charming lies Gehlweiler, the Schabbach from "Andere Heimat," the sequel, which explores a 19th-century prequel when many Hunsrück residents emigrated to Brazil to escape hunger and hardship at home. This led to more people speaking Hunsrück Platt in one corner of Brazil today than in the Hunsrück itself. From Gehlweiler down in the valley and past Gemünden, over which a surprisingly large castle towers, a hiking trail leads endlessly up the mountain to the Koppenstein castle ruins, home to the third observation tower on this tour, whose platform can be reached via an extremely narrow and steep staircase. A few kilometers further on, the next tower, the Alteburg, awaits.
