Athens is the capital of Greece and the country’s cultural, political and economical hub. The city was founded over 5,000 years ago and certain of its inhabitants have influenced the development of the western culture. Ancient Greek democracy had a deep influence on the design of other political institutions around the world. The city’s numerous historic monuments from the Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman eras, make it a fascinating place to visit for tourists from all over the world. Athens is home to two UNESCO World Heritage Sites: the Acropolis of Athens and the medieval Daphni Monastery. In 1834, following the Greek War of Independence, Athens was chosen as the capital for the newly independent Greek State. The city has hosted the Olympics three times: in 1896, 1906, and 2004. It is one of the few cities to host the Olympics more than once. Our guided walking tour is about 7.45 mile (12 km) long and covers most attractions and historic sites of Athens.
