In that moment, he decided: “If we do not control the sea, we cannot protect our people.” ■ 3. Cheonghaejin — Birth of a Maritime Empire In 828, King Heungdeok accepted Jang Bogo’s petition. Cheonghaejin (淸海鎭) was established in Wando— East Asia’s greatest maritime base, with 10,000 troops stationed there. Cheonghaejin crushed pirates and took control of trade connecting Silla, Tang, and Japan. Silk, ceramics, silver, spices— every sea route passed through Cheonghaejin. ■ 4. The Sea King — Stronger Than a King Jang Bogo was not a king, but he was stronger than one. In 839, during Silla’s struggle over the throne, Kim Ujing fled to Cheonghaejin, and Jang Bogo sent 5,000 soldiers to install him as King Sinmu. But making Jang Bogo’s daughter queen collapsed before the wall of the bone-rank system. ■ 5. Betrayal and Fall — The End of the Sea In 841 (the prevailing academic view), Jang Bogo was assassinated by his former subordinate Yeomjang. Ten years later, in 851, Cheonghaejin was shut down, and 100,000 residents were forcibly relocated. When the Sea King vanished, Silla’s sea fell into silence as well. ■ 6. What Jang Bogo Means Jang Bogo built East Asia’s first maritime trade empire, and he was a reformer who chose people by ability—beyond birth. He ruled the sea, but he could not break the wall of status.
