Micah Davis (born June 8, 1993), known professionally as MASEGO is a Jamaican-American songwriter, producer, singer and multi-instrumentalist known for incorporating the saxophone into his music making it sound chill and relaxing. He blends genres such as trap, house, and jazz, creating an emotive future-R&B fusion. Masego was born to a Jamaican father and an African-American mother in Kingston, Jamaica and raised in Newport News, Virginia. His father was in the U.S. Air Force and his mother was an entrepreneur. Both parents were pastors although he was raised in a non-denominational Christian home. He was raised with his two sisters. One is also a musical artist and the other is involved in voice acting and media outlets. He also has a brother in law. Military travels eventually led his family to Virginia, but he also lived in Sumter, South Carolina for a couple of years. Masego first learned how to play the drums without formal lessons at a young age. He began playing the saxophone and later picked up other instruments such as the piano. He also taught himself how to produce music, which would become a key part of his career. He got into music at the age of 8. He grew up in a room with over 200 vinyl records on the walls while simultaneously having friends giving him hard hitting drums and trap music influences. He had a bit of a church upbringing and felt like when he observed the musicians at church, he started to gravitate towards that community and just wanted to be a part of that passionate community of musicians. He started playing the drums first, then got to the piano and the sax, and then singing was last. Davis attended Woodside High School (Virginia) in Newport News, and Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia before leaving to focus solely on his musical career. In high school, he adopted the name Masego, a Tswana translation of his church name "blessing." Drawing from his upbringing of both his parents being pastors. He released songs online while finding his style, posting videos of live looping and on-the-spot beatmaking as well as tracks where he improvised saxophone over other artists' beats. In 2016, he released two EPs; The Pink Polo EP with Medasin, and Loose Thoughts. He gained widespread attention with his collaborative record with FKJ called "Tadow" in 2017. The accompanying video for the song went viral, showing the two musicians impressively live-looping all of the track's instruments in the studio. In 2018, he released his debut album Lady Lady. His album "Studying Abroad: Extended Stay" got nominated for the 2022 Grammy Awards in the "Best Progressive R&B Album" category. In 2020, Masego performed at the BET Awards, showcasing his song "Queen Tings". The performance was part of the BET Amplified program and was described as a celebration of Black women. Masego was also recognized as BET's Amplified Artist of the Month in connection with his BET Awards performance. Masego is an international, contemporary genre bending entertainer who refers to his own music style as "TrapHouseJazz" or Emotion. His blend of jazz, hip-hop, and R&B is not commonly found in mainstream music. His music often features live instrumentation, including his own saxophone playing, which sets him apart from other artists who rely heavily on electronic production. He is skilled at playing several instruments, including the saxophone, piano, and drums. He often incorporates his instrumental skills into his live performances, making for an engaging and dynamic show. Masego has amassed millions of followers and listeners across various social media platforms and streaming services. On Spotify, for example, Masego has over 12 million monthly listeners as of April 2025. He also has over 1 million subscribers on his YouTube channel, where his music videos and live performances often receive hundreds of thousands of views. He continues to perform in London, Portugal, Netherlands, USA, Spain, Ireland, Germany, Belgium, France, Italy, Austria, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Japan, Australia, Mexico and Africa, Masego is a talented musician who has made a name for himself with his unique blend of jazz, hip-hop, and R&B. His rise to fame is a testament to his musical ability and dedication to his craft.
