The German government has announced plans to build 71 new gas-fired power plants by 2035. This investment is estimated at over €60 billion. But even this won't solve the problem. In 2025, wind energy production fell by 31 percent compared to the previous year, and the shortfall had to be filled with coal and imports from the Czech Republic. The chemical, steel, and metallurgical industries are paying the highest price. BASF in Ludwigshafen – Europe's largest chemical plant – has reduced its ammonia and fertilizer production by a third, moving some lines to the US. At the same time, the steel industry in the Rhineland is experiencing its steepest declines since 2009. Another problem is innovation, or rather the lack thereof. In the WIPO 2025 ranking, Germany dropped out of the top ten most innovative economies in the world for the first time in a decade, landing in eleventh place. By comparison, China entered the top ten for the first time. This is a symbolic change of era. Germany continues to invest in research – 3.1 percent of GDP – but this translates increasingly poorly into practical implementation. Bureaucracy, inflexibility, and excessive regulation are slowing the development of technology startups. As a result, the country that coined the term "Industry 4.0" is itself stuck in version 2.5. By contrast, in the United States, venture capital investments in the AI ​​sector increased by 45 percent in 2025, while in Germany they fell by 12 percent.
