Groundbreaking Student Get-Together in Mandera County Fosters Climate Action Champions and Critical Thinkers. The Mazingira Alliance, in collaboration with the Institutions of Engineers of Kenya (IEK) - North Eastern Chapter, and several other stakeholders, organized a groundbreaking event: the first-ever student get-together in Mandera County. The primary objective of this initiative was to nurture critical thinking, scientific literacy, and a sense of active citizenship among the students. The organizers remain optimistic that this event will ignite a profound awakening not only within the student community but also among the wider population of Mandera. During the event, students from various schools actively engaged in activities such as debates on climate change, which took place at Moi Girls Secondary School. This remarkable undertaking plays a crucial role in empowering young minds, transforming them into climate action champions, and well-informed global citizens. Waes Abdullahi, the Chair of the Institutions of Engineers of Kenya (IEK) - North Eastern Chapter, emphasized that the primary purpose of such activities was to provide a platform for students to delve into pressing global issues. Mrs. Basra Hussein, the Director of Environment and Natural Resources in Mandera, stressed the importance of training students, particularly girls, to handle significant challenges they may encounter later in life. The climate change debate served as a valuable educational experience for the students, offering them an opportunity to delve into the scientific aspects, causes, impacts, and potential solutions related to climate change. Ultimately, this event successfully promoted critical thinking, scientific literacy, and active citizenship among the students. The hope is that it will lead to a profound awakening not only among the students but also within the wider community of Mandera. The educational experience gained from this climate change debate allowed the students to deepen their understanding of the science behind climate change, its causes, impacts, and potential solutions. It also honed their critical thinking, research skills, and public speaking abilities, making them better equipped to address global challenges in the future.
