Rebellion and Assassination: Rebels from Egypt, Kufa, and Basra surrounded Uthman's house for several weeks. They demanded that he step down as caliph. However, Uthman refused because he felt that it was a mandate from Allah. Finally, in 656 CE (35 AH), while Uthman was reading the Qur'an, the rebels stormed his house and brutally killed him. His wife, Naila, tried to protect him and injured her finger while trying to block the sword. Uthman’s blood fell on the mushaf he was reading, right at the verse: “...Then Allah will be sufficient for you against them, and He is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing. (QS. Al-Baqarah: 137) 2. Assassination of Caliph Ali bin Abi Talib (r.a.) 4th Caliph (656–661 CE) After the assassination of Uthman, Ali was appointed as caliph. His reign was full of conflict, including the Battle of Jamal and the Battle of Siffin, which exacerbated divisions among Muslims. The Battle of Siffin (657 CE) involved Ali and Muawiyah bin Abi Sufyan (the governor of Syria) who sought revenge for Uthman’s death. When peace was achieved through tahkim (arbitration), some of Ali’s supporters considered Ali to have “handed over the affairs of Allah to humans.” From here was born the Khawarij group, which later became Ali's enemy. Assassination by Khawarij: Khawarij considered Ali, Muawiyah, and Amr bin Ash as infidels and must be killed. A Khawarij named Abdurrahman bin Muljam made a plan to kill Ali in Kufa. On 17 Ramadan 40 H (661 AD), when Ali was heading to the mosque for the Subuh prayer, Ibn Muljam attacked him with a poisoned sword and wounded his head. A few days later, Ali died from the wound. In his will, Ali did not order revenge, but to uphold Islamic law fairly.
