Don't let preconceived notions limit our understanding of the world. This June, we drove from Beijing and Zhengzhou northwestwards. On our way to Linxia, ​​we stopped in Tianshui, the eastern gateway to Gansu, famous for its spicy hot pot. We assumed that being in the Northwest, a monthly rent of 800-900 yuan would be comfortable, but after visiting three apartments with a real estate agent, the actual prices and rental market shattered our preconceived notions. A three- or two-bedroom apartment of about 100 square meters generally costs around 2000 yuan per month. Even older apartments on the sixth floor without elevators and with outdated facilities cost 1500-1700 yuan. This price is almost on par with many second-tier provincial capitals (like Zhengzhou). Why are rents so high in a small northwestern city? After further investigation, we discovered that besides its famous spicy hot pot and cultural tourism resources like the Fuxi Temple and Maijishan Grottoes, Tianshui is also home to Huatian Technology, the world's sixth-largest and China's top three integrated circuit packaging and testing company, as well as a large number of semiconductor technology enterprises. The unique topography of a river nestled between two mountains leads to a shortage of rental housing, coupled with its cool summers and comfortable climate suitable for retirement… all these hidden factors contribute to the high cost of living in this city.
