New Scoutmaster Checklist: Don't Skip These

One of the most important people in a young person's life is their Scoutmaster. New Scoutmasters (SM) and Assistant Scoutmasters (ASM) are critical to the success of Scouts and the troop. Here are some tips and advice from Scouters who have been there. Scouting can change the world. The better a Scoutmaster is at mentoring and coaching, the better the Scouts will succeed. New SM & ASM need online and in-person training throughout their time in the position. A good Scoutmaster is always looking for an opportunity to learn. This position is a scout-facing type of leadership. The more Training and information you have will make your job much easier. The rewards of this position are tremendous. Once you have past your first year you will find that every year the job will get naturally more accessible. These are some of the things that you will need to do as soon as possible. Online Training – Make sure that you complete all of the required online training. Also, make sure that your YPT training certificate is kept up to date. If live training is available in your area take advantage of the opportunity. ILST – Every Scoutmaster and Assistant Scoutmaster we'll need to organize and conduct their Troops Introduction to Leadership Skills for the youth leadership. Roundtable – connections to other Packs, Troops, Crews, and Ships leaders. Unit Commissioner – Find your unit commissioner and ask them to meet with you at the next meeting. Ask them to observe the meeting and make suggestions afterward. University of Scouting – this is a supplemental training day. Many courses on many different subjects.
