Compost Upgrade and Garden Harvest

We tackled upgrading our compost bed. The chickens loved scratching through the compost and spreading material all over the yard, so it was time for a better solution. Using some old 10x10 lumber, T-posts, a metal fence panel, and chicken wire, we built a two-section compost system that will make rotating and managing compost much easier moving forward. After finishing the compost project, we harvested lettuce and broccoli and added the plant scraps to the compost pile. We also planted a row of Contender Bush Beans before moving on to harvesting and weeding throughout the garden. This week brought some great harvests, including red and green cabbage. We used part of the harvest to can homemade coleslaw and froze the rest for later use. We also picked Butterfinger squash and Green Machine zucchini, and our tomatoes are finally starting to ripen. The red and yellow cherry tomatoes are producing daily and have quickly become one of our favorite garden snacks. We've since then planted Popcorn, Jimmy Red Corn, two cantaloupes and two watermelons, and spaghetti squash. It's been exciting to look back on these garden updates and see how much progress has been made throughout the season.
