How the Aztec Goddess Tonantzin Became the Virgin of Guadalupe

The Virgin of Guadalupe emerged from the fusion of two civilizations: For the Spanish, she was a continuation of the Virgin Mary, a Christianized Athena and matron-general of the Reconquista. For the Aztecs, she was Tonantzin, the ancient mother goddess of fertility, life, and survival, reappearing at Tepeyac to protect her people. Her story became a symbol of religious syncretism and indigenous dignity.
