Brothers Johnson ~ I'll Be Good To You 1976 Disco Purrfection Version
Louis and George Johnson were seasoned session players having worked with Bill Withers and Billy Preston when they auditioned for Stevie Wonder at the Record Plant recording studio B. The funk these two brought with them attracted the producer in Studio C, namely Quincy Jones who was impressed. Jones had the duo write a few songs for his Mellow Madness LP and after touring Japan with him had them bring songs to him for their own LP. George was dating a few ladies, but one of them Debbie, stood out from the rest. He wrote "I'll Be Good To You" as a symbol of his dedication to her. They eventually married. The third writer was Senora Sam who happened to stop by the house when the song was being written and added "the way we stand and the way we lie". George was a little put off doing the lead vocals since he had little experience. The song was released on May 1, 1976 and peaked at #1 R&B but spent three weeks stuck at #3 on the Hot100 behind "Afternoon Delight" for two weeks and "Kiss & Say Goodbye" for the third.
