Granulomatous Prostatitis - Pathology mini tutorial
Granulomatous prostatitis is an important condition to diagnose because it is benign but can mimic prostate cancer both clinically and pathologically. Although there are many specific causes of granulomatous prostatitis such as bacterial, fungal and viral infections and systemic granulomatous conditions such as sarcoid, in most cases the cause is unknown. This video concentrates on idiopathic granulomatous prostatitis. This accounts for nearly 70% of cases. Whatever the cause of granulomatous prostatitis, the mechanism causing it is disruption of the epithelium lining prostatic ducts. This allows prostatic secretions to enter the prostatic stroma causing a granulomatous inflammatory response.
