The author had heard a lot about her grandmother. She was illiterate, traditional, and observed the purdah system. Her maternal grandfather, after marriage, graduated from Cambridge University as a barrister and began living a life of foreign luxury, but this had no effect on her grandmother. Therefore, she entrusted her daughter's marriage to her husband's friend, freedom fighter Pyare Lal Sharma, saying she wanted her daughter to marry a freedom fighter. Thus, the author's mother was married to a freedom fighter. She now wore a khadi sari, which she found unbearable. The author had never seen her mother as an Indian mother. She paid no attention to the family or the children's food and drink. She loved reading and listening to music. She possessed two key qualities: first, she never lied, and second, she never shared one's secrets with another. This earned her respect within the family and friendship with outsiders. The author's great-grandmother was fond of offbeat ways. She went to the temple and prayed that her daughter-in-law's first child be a girl. Hearing this, people were stunned. God blessed her with five daughters. Once, everyone in the house was away attending a wedding, and a vigil was being held. The author's grandmother was sleeping in another room because of the noise. Just then, a thief broke in and entered the room. The great-grandmother woke up and asked the thief for a pot of water. The thief yielded to the old grandmother's insistence, and he brought water from the well. The great-grandmother drank half the pot herself and gave the thief the other half, saying, "Now we are mother and son. It's up to you to steal or farm." Obeying her advice, the thief gave up stealing and started farming. The author's sisters never felt any inferiority because they were girls. The first daughter for whom her great-grandmother made a wish was Manjula Bhagat. The second daughter was the writer herself, Mridula Garg (her nickname was Uma). The third sister was Chitra, followed by sisters named Renu and Achala. After these five sisters, there was a brother, Rajiv. The writer's brother, Rajiv, wrote in Hindi, and Achala in English. Renu had a peculiar temperament. She would refuse to ride in the car on her way back from school, walking drenched in sweat. Her views were against the feudal system. She did not even consider it appropriate to pass her BA. The writer's third sister, Chitra, was more interested in teaching than in studying. Consequently, she scored lower than her students. She chose a boy for her marriage at first sight and declared that she would marry only him, and she married him. Achala, the youngest sister, was a student of journalism and economics. She married as per her father's choice and also had a passion for writing. Everyone lived a happy life. After marriage, the author moved to Dalmia Nagar, a town in Bihar. There, she performed plays with the local women. Later, she moved to Bagalkot, a town in the Mysore state. There, she independently opened a primary school, where her children and those of other officers studied, and they were then enrolled in various schools in different cities. By opening the school, the author demonstrated that she could never fail in her endeavors. However, she considered herself inferior to her younger sister, Renu. Recalling another incident, she writes that in the late 1950s, Delhi received nine inches of heavy rain, leaving everything flooded. Renu's school bus hadn't arrived. Everyone told her that the school would be closed, so she shouldn't go, but she refused. Determined to do so, she walked two miles to school and returned after it closed.
