Local Communities Restore Hawaii Coral Reefs
Coral reef health in Hawaiʻi is under threat from climate change, sediment runoff, and damage caused by boat anchors and powerful waves. Our work with Kuleana Coral Restoration trains Native Hawaiians and community members how to dive and restore coral, incorporating both Native Hawaiian values and western scientific practices. The training they receive helps prepare them for jobs in the marine science field. For some participants, it’s the opportunity of a lifetime.
