ATAQUE VENEZUELA | ¿QUÉ va a PASAR tras la CAPTURA DE MADURO? | Podcast HOY EN EL PAÍS
In the early hours of Saturday, US bombs fell on Caracas and other strategic locations in Venezuela. Nicolás Maduro was captured and taken to New York, where he will be tried for narcoterrorism. Control of the country has been handed over to Donald Trump, as he himself announced, until a transition takes place. It is unclear who will lead this process or what the consequences will be for Venezuelans and under international law. The situation in Caracas is highly tense and uncertain. The streets awoke to silence, with shops closed, highways blocked, and a 72-hour curfew in effect. The Venezuelan government activated a state of emergency and deployed all police forces, while calling for armed resistance. The big question is whether this unprecedented situation will finally lead to the political transition that has been brewing since the 2024 elections, when the opposition appeared to have won and Maduro remained in power. In this episode, Ana Fuentes speaks with Florantonia Singer, EL PAÍS correspondent in Caracas; Boris Muñoz, investigative journalist, columnist, and chronicler speaking from Boston; and Juan Diego Quesada, former correspondent in Colombia and Venezuela. 00:00 – Bombs in Caracas and Maduro's capture: what has happened? 01:30 – Trump announces the operation and displays a photo of Maduro in custody 02:06 – “I will take control until a secure transition”: what does that mean? 02:21 – And María Corina Machado?
