Compassionate Mathematics in Practice

Speaker: Aris Winger (Georgia Gwinnett College) Abstract: What does compassion look like in mathematics in practice? In this session, we will look at some working definitions of what compassion means in the context of mathematics. We will dive into how these working definitions might seem to bring tension with the typical narratives of mathematical culture and seek to resolve the potential clash in hopes for a better mathematical community. We will explore various scenarios that arise in mathematical culture in which we ask “where does compassion place a role here?” Participants will leave the session with a number of working definitions of Compassion, Compassionate Math, along with new ways of viewing aspects of mathematical culture in new and empathetic ways. Talk at the AMS Special Session on "Compassion as a Mathematical Practice" at the 2026 Joint Mathematics Meetings in Washington, DC.
