Most underrated trout fishing in the United States | Fly Fishing New Mexico

What comes to mind when I say “New Mexico”? Massive swaths of pristine public land? Rich history and culture? Trophy hunting and fishing alike? I would be willing to bet not… Are you seeing images of Bugs bunny taking a wrong turn at Albuquerque? Maybe you are thinking of scrub deserts, adobe architecture, and maybe spicy chilis…? Or my favorite! Aliens and Nuclear bombs… And truth be told I don’t blame you, before I moved here I probably thought the same thing. But with almost a full year under my wading belt in the “Land of enchantment”, this couldn't be farther from the truth. From the southern border with Mexico all the way up to colorful Colorado in the north, New Mexico is full of unique fly fishing opportunities that can only be found here. The Gila National Forest, The Rio Grande Gorge, and the San Juan Tailwater are just a few of the noteworthy attractions that pull anglers towards this southwest gem. Much like a lot of other western states, the New Mexico Fish and Game along with various trout unlimited chapters host a “Trout Slam” or a “Trout Challenge”. This challenge is meant to entice “out of staters” and encourage residents to explore this enchanting state. But more importantly these challenges are meant to raise awareness for the special fish and the waters they swim in. often times if people aren’t aware of something.. They don’t really care. Even though I haven't been here long, I care about these waters and I hope this video inspires you to explore. This is going to be a video chronicling my pursuit of New Mexico's Five Trout Species across the seasons. I hope any of you out there viewing this can gain a better understanding of the fly fishing opportunities New Mexico hides in her box canyons and scrub oak valleys.
