He Had a Way Out. He Chose Death.
Socrates' friends had already bribed the guards. The cell door could be unlocked. A ship was waiting to take him anywhere in Greece he wanted to go. He said no. In 399 BC, Socrates was sentenced to death by an Athenian jury for "corrupting the youth" and impiety. While he sat in prison awaiting execution, his wealthy friend Crito offered him a real, working escape plan, money, transport, a place to disappear to. Socrates refused, choosing to drink poison hemlock rather than break the laws he'd spent his life defending. This video breaks down why he made that choice, what it actually teaches about integrity under pressure, and why his death became one of the most studied moments in the history of philosophy.
