The Sioux Were Older Than the Map — And DNA Just Proved It
The Sioux Were Older Than the Map — And DNA Just Proved It For generations, scientists believed they understood where the Sioux came from. A migration from the woodlands. A people who found the buffalo and became inseparable from it. An origin with a clear beginning and a comprehensible arc. Then researchers pulled ancient DNA from bones that had rested in the Montana earth for twelve thousand years. The story did not stay settled. It cracked open. In 2018, two landmark genomic studies published simultaneously in Science and Cell analyzed ancient DNA spanning more than ten thousand years of American prehistory. One sample changed everything: a two-year-old child found in a Montana burial site, dated to between 12,500 and 12,700 years ago — the oldest successfully sequenced individual from the Americas. His DNA had been waiting in the earth for more than twelve millennia. What the genome revealed was not what the standard model predicted. The founding population of the Americas was not a single homogeneous group moving in one coherent wave from Siberia. It was already diverse when it arrived. It carried within it the genetic signatures of multiple distinct ancestry streams — echoes of population movements so ancient they predated any named migration, any known culture, any written or oral record. This video breaks down all three frameworks researchers have proposed to explain the complexity: the absorption model, the ancient transoceanic signal, and the possibility that the founding populations of the Americas were more genetically diverse than anyone assumed from the very beginning. We trace the faint Population Y signal appearing in northern plains genomes where no model predicted it, and what it means for everything we thought we knew about the Lakota, Dakota, and Nakota. The researchers were looking for a tree — a clean diagram of descent with a knowable beginning. The data kept offering them something more honest. A web. The Lakota have a phrase: Mitákuye Oyás'iŋ. All my relations. They were never confused about this. They were just waiting for the science to catch up. 🔔 Subscribe for deep dives into ancient DNA, indigenous history, and the discoveries that continue to rewrite the human story.
