Paschendale. Iron Maiden acoustic cover.
Another fantastic song from Iron Maiden. In this acoustic version I wanted to bring these brilliant hard hitting lyrics to the fore. I hope I did ok. The story of Paschendale is over 100 years old, but how relevant these words are today, with soldiers experiencing the living hell of war and trenches. And in today's wars the trenches extend to people's homes with innocent civilians dying in the rubble. Men, women, children, babies. And as for our friend in the story, "On his dying words he prays, tell the world of Paschendale......" As always, thanks for listening 🙂🎸 And let's wish for peace.... Update... There are a couple of other songs in my little collection which touch on the same subject:- The first is called "The Green Fields of France"    • Green Fields of France (No Man's Land).  T...  The second is called "Why Old Men Cry", which opens with the words "I walked from Ypres to Paschendale."    • Why Old Men Cry. Dick Gaughan.  I hope you like them. Enjoy. 🙂🎸 Update no. 2. January 2025 A friend of mine has just lent me a book called "They Called It Paschendale" by Lyn Macdonald. It makes very sober reading, but is very well compiled with many anecdotes from surviving soldiers. It describes the dreadful conditions our soldiers had to endure and the appalling waste of life. It also details acts of kindness and humanity. In particular I recall a soldier trying to dig his tank out of a hole. A second tank crew who were trying to help were bombed and killed. But the soldier continued to rescue his own tank, and when he succeeded he saw a hand waving from a bomb crater. It was a wounded German soldier. He helped him out of the hole, dressed his wound, and gave him some chocolate. The German suggested in broken French to swap addresses, which they did. They then carted him off in an ambulance and the English soldier carried on with the war. Many years later, in fact after the Second World War the English man went on holiday to Germany with his wife and they went to the address and found the old German soldier and his wife, and they became great friends. Humanity and love triumphs over war and hatred. Although difficult to read, I recommend it, to try and understand what they went through, and the stupidity of War which still continues.
