My Akita needs SURGERY AGAIN | Dog Salivary Mucocele
One day I noticed a large lump or mass underneath our dog's tongue! I could tell right away this wasn't normal so I looked up what it could be. From pictures online, the swelling under my dog's tongue looked like it was a swollen or enlarged salivary gland. When we were finally able to get our American Akita, Haga, to the vet, they confirmed what I thought..it was an enlarged salivary gland, also known as a mucocele. To my knowledge, Akitas aren't especially prone to mucocles, in fact I've never heard of another dog, Akita or otherwise, having this issue, and the veterinary community actually doesn't even know what causes mucoceles. We essentially had two options, wait a few months to get in with a surgeon to have them remove the salivary gland, or to have our regular veterinarian aspirate the tissue, and "marsupeloize" the gland in hopes of allowing the backed up saliva to drain properly. Because we didn't want to wait months to have our Akita treated, we opted to have the gland drained...which worked well for about a month. Ultimately we had our dog's salivary gland removed to keep the issue from coming back. The procedure was relatively simple and we actually wished we had just done that in the first place. So if your Akita or other dog has a large lump under their tongue, get them to the vet as soon as you can, but don't panic, it may just be a mucocele.
