FIRST READING Hosea 11:1-4, 8c-9 “My heart is stirred within me” A reading from the Book of Hosea This is what the Lord says: “When Israel was a child, I loved him; and I called my son to bring him out of Egypt. But the more I called them, the more they went away from me. They sacrificed to Baal and burned incense to idols. Yet it was I who taught Ephraim to walk and carried them in my arms; but they did not realize that it was I who cared for them. I drew them with cords of human kindness, with ties of love. I lifted them from my lap, and bent down to feed them. My heart is stirred within me, it trembles with compassion.” I will not yield to the heat of my anger, nor will I again destroy Ephraim. Do not get gold, silver or copper to store in your bags; no bag for the journey, no extra shirt, no sandals or a staff; for the worker is worth his keep. When you enter a town or village, search there for someone worthy and stay at their house until you leave that place.” When you enter a house, greet it, and if it is worthy, let your peace descend upon it; but if it is not worthy, let your peace return to you. If anyone does not receive you or listen to your words, leave that house or that city and shake the dust off your feet.
