How to Prune Choisya, Gardening, Essex, UK • How to Prune Choisya, Pruning Choisya 'Sno... The cuttings, that are now happily growing, demonstrate that plant pruning’s don’t necessarily have to be thrown away as waste and that you can make good use of the cut off plant material to increase numbers of your favourite plants. Obviously not all plants are as easy to propagate as Choisya but that is part of the fun, and challenge, of gardening and horticulture. Tools Required: Clean and sharp secateurs, Hormone Rooting compound, Soil based planting media First thing to know when looking to take plant cuttings is at what stage of the year the cuttings should be made for the best chances of success. The stage of growth and time of year will determine if softwood, semi ripe or ripe wood cuttings will have to be used. For Choisya, soft wood or semi ripe cuttings are best. To take cuttings you are looking to use stem lengths of 4-6” (10-15cm). Using clean and sharp secateurs make a cut just below a set of leaves. Remove the lower sets of leaves to leave a clear stem of about 2” (5-6cm). Dip the base of the stem into hormone rooting compound. Using a dibber, or similar implement, make a hole about 1” (3cm) deep. Insert the base of the cutting into the hole and then firm soil back around the cutting stem. The cutting taken from a Choisya will root in 2-3 months but if the cuttings are taken in late spring or early summer then it is best to wait until the following year to pot up the cuttings.
