But behind its striking melodies, Alphaville hid a painful portrait of addiction, hopelessness, and the human desire to escape reality. • Berlin's Dark Underworld: The song was directly inspired by the underground scene of late-1970s West Berlin. A gray, claustrophobic environment heavily marked by hard drug use. • Fantasy and Escapism: The lyrics follow the journey of two heroin-addicted lovers. To bear the weight of addiction and the feeling of failure in the real world, they create a fantasy of a perfect place, free from pain, where they would finally be accepted. • The Meaning of the Expression: In the music industry, the slang "Big in Japan" was used to describe Western bands that blew up in the Asian market, even while being failures or ignored in their home countries.
