"Sottopagati e sfruttati: siamo i nuovi schiavi". Tra gli stagionali della Riviera romagnola

"Underpaid and exploited: we are the new slaves." Luca (not his real name), who has been serving cocktails to tourists in bars on the Romagna Riviera for ten years, says so without hesitation. "The contracts for us seasonal workers are bogus: we're supposed to work six hours, but we do double that, we don't have a day off, not even sick pay." With Covid, the situation has worsened: "Wages have halved," says the young bartender. "But we Romagnoli are luckier: those who come from outside are forced to sleep in substandard closets and eat appalling meals." According to trade associations, more than 7,000 workers are missing to restart the beach season. "The employers complain and call us slackers," says Mattia Giannotti of Mai più sfruttamento stagionale USB, "but evidently, this data means that the workers have finally said enough to this exploitative situation."
