Between 1926 and 1928, Gordon Stewart Northcott abducted and murdered three boys, and was implicated but not convicted in the murder of a fourth boy, in Los Angeles and Riverside County, California. The remains of three of the boys were found at his farm in Wineville (now Mira Loma), with the fourth being found in La Puente. Northcott, a native of Canada, moved to the U.S. in 1924 with his parents. The case later became known as the Wineville Chicken Coop murders. Besides Northcott, his mother Sarah Northcott and his young nephew Sanford Clark were also suspected in participating in the murders. Learning that the authorities were searching for him, Northcott fled to Canada along with his mother and was arrested while visiting his sister (Sanford Clark's mother) in Canada in November 1928. The case received national attention because one of the assumed victims was 9-year-old Walter Collins, whose disappearance in March 1928 had led to an impostor claiming Walter's identity for several days in a widely publicized case. When investigators from the Riverside County Sheriff's Department searched the property, they uncovered several gruesome pieces of evidence: Shallow Graves: Authorities found three shallow graves beneath the dirt floors of the chicken coops. Human Remains: The graves did not contain complete bodies but rather 51 human body parts, including finger bones, a kneecap, bits of flesh, and clumps of hair on a piece of scalp. Quicklime: Clark testified that Northcott used quicklime to dissolve the remains before he and his mother, Sarah Louise Northcott, exhumed and moved the larger remains to a deserted area to be burned. Personal Belongings: Items belonging to victims Lewis and Nelson Winslow, such as clothing and a library book from Pomona Public Library, were found on-site. Weapons: A bloody axe, cleavers, and a .22 caliber rifle used in the killings were recovered. The original crime scene is located at 6330 Wineville Road, Jurupa Valley, CA 91752. The House: The original farmhouse where Northcott lived still stands and is a private residence. The Coops: The infamous chicken coops have long been removed, though their locations on the property can still be identified by comparing modern views with archived crime scene photos. Community Impact: The town of Wineville changed its name to Mira Loma in 1930 to distance itself from the stigma of the murders. Walter Collins was a nine-year-old American boy whose 1928 disappearance in Los Angeles triggered a major police scandal. The case remains one of California's most haunting mysteries and was the inspiration for the 2008 film Changeling, starring Angelina Jolie. The Disappearance and the Impostor On March 10, 1928, Walter left his home in Lincoln Heights to go to the movies and never returned. Five months later, the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) claimed to have found him in Illinois. The Reunion: Despite Walter's mother, Christine Collins, insisting the boy was not her son—noting physical differences and using dental records—Police Captain J.J. Jones pressured her to "try him out". Retaliation: When Christine persisted, the LAPD committed her to a psychiatric ward under "Code 12" to silence her and protect their reputation from public criticism. The Truth: Ten days later, the boy admitted he was actually 12-year-old Arthur Hutchens Jr.. He had impersonated Walter in a bid to reach Hollywood and meet his favourite actor, Tom Mix.
