A MORTE DO CANGACEIRO JARARACA, HOMEM FORTE DE LAMPIÃO

On the afternoon of June 13, 1927, Saint Anthony's Day, Virgulino Ferreira da Silva, Lampião, the king of the cangaço, and his 53 cangaceiros faced at least 150 armed men in defense of Mossoró, one of the most prosperous cities in Rio Grande do Norte. A day after the battle, while the people of Mossoró still feared the possible return of Lampião, thirsty for revenge, one of the gang's main cangaceiros, Jararaca, was captured crawling through the undergrowth. What followed was a tragicomic story, one of the most intriguing events in the history of the northeastern cangaço (lampionic). Jararaca, the Pernambuco native, was named José Leite de Santana.
