Hello, I am Dr Supriya Puranik. In this video I will tell you about the causes, diagnosis and treatment of Post-Menopausal Bleeding (PMB). What is Menopause? When a woman's periods stop for 12 consecutive months, it is called menopause. The average menopause age of women in India is 45-50 years. But bleeding or spotting after menopause can be a cause of concern. Especially if bleeding occurs after intercourse, it is important to consult a doctor immediately. Causes of Post-Menopausal Bleeding Vaginal & Endometrial Atrophy - Estrogen levels decrease after menopause, which causes the uterus and vaginal walls to become thin and bleeding may occur. Polyps or abnormal growths - Growths in the uterus or cervix can cause bleeding. Endometrial Hyperplasia – When the lining of the uterus becomes too thick, irregular bleeding may occur. Reproductive Cancers – Endometrial, cervical, or ovarian cancers can also cause post-menopausal bleeding. Hormone Therapy (HRT) – Taking the wrong dose or missing a dose during hormonal treatment can also cause bleeding. How to know if it is normal or serious? Pelvic Examination – The doctor will examine the uterus and cervix. Ultrasound (Sonography) – The thickness of the lining of the uterus is determined. Biopsy & Pap Smear – If there is any doubt, tests are done to confirm serious conditions such as cancer. How is bleeding treated? If the cause is Vaginal Atrophy – It can be treated with estrogen cream or gel. If the cause is the wrong dose of HRT – It is important to plan the right hormone therapy. If the cause is Polyps or Fibroids – minor surgery can be done to remove them. If cancer is suspected – the doctor may recommend additional tests, surgery, radiation or chemotherapy. Do not ignore post-menopausal bleeding If bleeding is occurring after menopause, do not take it lightly. The sooner the diagnosis is done, the sooner the right treatment can be done.
