When the Dhamma is being preached, it should be listened to with great respect. Listening to the sermon while seated on elevated seats, listening with one’s back turned to the preacher, or listening while stretching one’s feet toward the preacher are all forms of disrespect toward the Dhamma. Also, not paying attention to the preaching and engaging in other work, or talking in a way that disturbs others who are listening, are likewise acts of disrespect toward the Dhamma. Listening to the sermon respectfully becomes a meritorious deed, whereas showing disrespect to the Dhamma becomes an unwholesome deed. One should understand this well.
