Exercises to strengthen the back, lower back, gluteal muscles, and extensors of the remaining leg. To facilitate and accelerate learning to walk with a prosthesis, it is necessary to prepare the muscles of the body and remaining leg. The following exercises will help. ➥ Starting position: lying on your stomach Raise your shoulder girdle, bring your arms close to your torso, and squeeze your shoulder blades together. Hold for a few seconds, then lower yourself back down, relaxing. During this exercise, look at the floor to avoid overloading your cervical spine. It's important not to hold your breath; breathe evenly. ➥ Exercise variation Squeeze your shoulder blades together, extend your arms out to the sides with your palms facing forward, squeeze your shoulder blades together again, and lower yourself back to the starting position, relaxing. ➥ Adding leg movements You can add leg movements to these exercises to increase the overall load. This should be done as your body recovers from surgery. In the previous exercises, you raised your legs one at a time. Subsequently, they can be raised simultaneously with the shoulder girdle. Raise the shoulder girdle and the intact leg. Raise, bring your shoulder blades together, hold for 2-3 seconds, and then lower, relaxing. Then perform the exercise with the amputated leg. Do several repetitions on each side. Resting time should depend on your overall condition. To do this, place your fist on top of your fist and rest your chin on them. Breathing: inhale through your nose, exhale through your mouth. ➥ Swimming Exercise Spread your legs shoulder-width apart, and as you rise, bring your shoulder blades together, elbows close to your torso. Next, imitate a breaststroke: raise your arms up, out to the sides, and bring your shoulder blades together. You can start with 4 repetitions, then rest. Over time, increase the number of repetitions to 15-20. ✔ It is important to monitor your breathing and body position. There should be no pain in either the upper or lower back. Pain is a command to stop doing the exercise. Tension may be felt, but there should be no pain. Exercises to strengthen the muscles of the back, waist, buttocks and extensors of the safe leg. In order to start using the prosthesis and learn to walk on it correctly and with ease, adequate strength must be built up in all large and medium muscle groups. It is crucial to develop the muscles of the spine and buttocks, of the safe and amputated leg and of the abdominal crunch. Strength development exercises are at first performed with the body weight supported in the starting positions “lying on the back, side or stomach”. In the video you can find exercises in starting position “lying on the stomach”, including very important swimming exercise. When performing the exercises pay attention to your breathing: do not hold your breathe. You should not feel any pain when performing exercises. The pain is the signal to stop exercises. ➥What is the Prosthetic Walking School? A walking school is a complex of rehabilitation measures for patients recovering from lower limb amputation and teaching them to walk with a prosthesis. This program includes postoperative patient care, anti-edema compression therapy for the stump, therapeutic exercises and massage (physiotherapy, kinesiotherapy, occupational therapy), teaching proper, symmetrical, energy-saving walking with a prosthesis, and mastering everyday skills. The goal of the walking school is to return patients to their previous level of physical activity, returning them to their favorite activities and work, increasing their independence and self-confidence, and improving their quality of life. ➥What is the School of Walking on a Prosthesis? The School of Walking on a Prosthesis is a patient rehabilitation program following lower limb amputation and training in walking with a prosthesis. The program includes postoperative medical treatment, residual oedema control, physiotherapy, ergotherapy, massage, and training in a symmetrical energy-saving gait on a prosthesis, helping the patient regain their self-care skills. The goals of the School of Walking are to help people maintain or regain their freedom of movement, help them return to work and hobbies, reclaim their independence and self-confidence, and improve their quality of life.
